Equatorial Guinea’s Jesús Owono Breaks Silence After Incident in Spain

FC Andorra and Equatorial Guinea International goalkeeper Jesus Owono is experiencing “the most difficult days of my life” after the death of Tenerife forward Jesus de Miguel.

De Miguel, 30, died from an injury during a Spanish second division match on Monday after colliding with Owono. The football community honored him with a minute’s silence at all European games this week.

In a statement, Owono shared his pain: “I struggle to find the words. I feel enormous pain over the loss of Jesus. I think of him, his family, and everyone who loved him. Right now, I cannot think about anything other than Jesus and our shared pain. Rest in peace, Jesus.”

FC Andorra teammate Lautaro Spatz defended Owono, stating he never intended to hurt anyone and is profoundly affected by De Miguel’s death.

The incident occurred while the score was 2-2 in stoppage time. De Miguel lay motionless on the pitch before being taken to the hospital. Owono has since deactivated his Instagram account.

Spanish police opened an investigation into possible involuntary manslaughter following De Miguel’s death, which automatically triggers a judicial inquiry. Owono has made 47 international appearances for Equatorial Guinea, and the football federation offered support to him.

Mourners honored De Miguel with flowers and candles at the stadium. Tenerife announced six days of mourning, suspending all club activities, and their players will attend De Miguel’s funeral. They will open their stadium for supporters to say goodbye. Matches for Tenerife and Andorra this weekend have been postponed.
