Heartbreak for Sierra Leone as Zimbabwe Snatch Victory

Zimbabwe Warriors came back from being two goals down to win 3-2 against Sierra Leone at El Jadida Stadium in Morocco. Sierra Leone’s Alie Conteh and Sallieu Tarawallie scored early goals in their Group E Cup of Nations qualifier on Thursday.

Alie Conteh scored the first goal in the seventh minute with a header from the centre of the box into the bottom left corner, assisted by a cross from Sallieu Tarawallie.

Later, after controlling the ball well, Sallieu Tarawallie shot with his left foot from close range into the bottom left corner after a corner kick.

Just before the hour mark, Azeem Abdulai, a former Scotland U21 player, made his international debut for Sierra Leone. MJ Kamson-Kamara, a defender from Kilmarnock in Scotland, also made his debut for Sierra Leone, replacing Juma Bah in defence as a substitute in the second half.

When you think all is going well for Sierra Leone, Zimbabwe pulled one back from Wolves attacker Marshall Munetsi’s header from the centre of the box to the bottom right corner. Assisted by Tawanda Chirewa with a cross following a corner to make it 2-1 in the 72nd minute.

Zimbabwe made a strong comeback, equalising the match at 2-2. Tawanda Chirewa scored with a left-footed shot from outside the box to the top left corner, assisted by Marvellous Nakamba.

They completed their comeback with a second goal from Marshall Munetsi in the 88th minute. Sierra Leone lost focus after leading by two goals until the 70th minute of the match.

Meanwhile, DR Congo defeated Equatorial Guinea 2-0 in their first match of Group E in the AFCON 2027 qualifying tournament. The game took place at Stade des Martyrs de la Pentecôte on Thursday. With this victory, DR Congo is in first place in Group E after Match Day One.
