Guinea-Bissau and The Gambia Deliver Stunning Matchday Two Results

Nigeria and Ghana faced heavy defeats in Tuesday’s TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, while Guinea-Bissau and The Gambia delivered standout performances on Matchday Two.

Guinea-Bissau shocked the Super Eagles with a 3-0 victory, marking their second straight win in Group L, while Ghana let a two-goal lead slip away, losing 4-2 to The Gambia, and remains without a point in Group C.

In other matches, Rwanda retained their perfect record with a 2-1 win over Cape Verde, co-hosts Uganda narrowly defeated Libya 1-0, and Zambia bounced back from their opening defeat by overcoming Togo with the same scoreline.

The tournament features 48 teams divided into 12 groups of four, with only the top-placed non-host nation advancing from groups that include co-hosts Kenya, Tanzania, or Uganda.

In Group L, Guinea-Bissau made headlines with a stunning victory against Nigeria, taking control of the qualifying race. Franculino opened the scoring in the 15th minute, and Mama Baldé doubled the lead midway through the second half.

Now, Comoros, Namibia, and Cameroon all have three points, although Cameroon has played one fewer match. Cameroon will play against Congo in the next game, with Congo currently at the bottom of the group, seeking their first win.

Sierra Leone Stars’ AFCON Hopes Suffer Second Straight Defeat

The Leone Stars of Sierra Leone on Monday, September 28, 2026, suffered another setback in their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying campaign after losing 1–0 to Equatorial Guinea in their second Group E match.

The defeat leaves Sierra Leone without a point from their opening two matches, following their dramatic 3–2 loss to Zimbabwe in the group opener.

On Thursday, September 24, 2026, the Leone Stars had made a promising start against Zimbabwe, racing into a two-goal lead through Alie Conteh and Sallieu Tarawallie before conceding three second-half goals to surrender the advantage.

Against Equatorial Guinea, however, Sierra Leone were unable to find the attacking spark needed to rescue their campaign, with the hosts securing a narrow 1-0 victory.

The result puts additional pressure on the new Sierra Leone coach, Didier Gomes Da Rosa, who’s looking forward to reviving the Leone Stars’ qualification hopes and ending a four-year absence from the AFCON finals.

Sierra Leone’s latest setback also continues a difficult recent run against Equatorial Guinea, who have proved a challenging opponent in previous competitive meetings.

However, with two defeats from two matches, the Leone Stars now face a difficult road ahead in Group E and will need a strong response in their remaining fixtures to stay in contention for a place at the 2027 tournament.
